DBR Game

A “board” game designed for interactive play on the conference room table, The Pinnacle Drum-Buffer- Rope Simulator Game is an attention-focusing “hands on” way to introduce the Theory of Constraints (ToC) concepts of Drum-Buffer-Rope (DBR) and Synchronous Flow Manufacturing (SFM). It is suitable for all levels of management. The game simulates a small manufacturing facility, but minor adjustments make it equally appropriate for service organizations.

Object of the Game: To create awareness and understanding of constraint management concepts and their implications for the organization. The Pinnacle Drum-Buffer-Rope Simulation Game presents many of the same problems encountered in real life manufacturing and, just like real life, “winning” is a matter of learning how to make successful improvements. In this game of observation and reasoning, success comes when players begin to see how to apply change in new ways that have greater impact on performance and outcomes. Players gain new insight into the “big picture” of production and the economic realities of manufacturing. By the time play concludes, a clear understanding of their personal roles in improving the entire system will emerge. It is a powerful and enjoyable way to introduce basic principles and variations of DBR.

Game includes instructions, game cards, play "parts" and play money.

But what's it got to do with business?

Everything. It looks and plays like a board game, but it works like a tabletop DBR simulator. While it harnesses the same message and the teaching techniques computer simulators use, the advantage is that it’s uncomplicated, easy to learn and only takes 3 hours to play.

It teaches:

  • What a constraint is
  • How to keep score (globally)
  • Where to focus improvements
  • What subordination behavior is

It proves:

  • Local performance measures based
    on utilization create many problems.
  • Flooding the plant with work never
    helped anyone.
  • It doesn’t matter if everybody isn’t
    100% busy all the time.
